Science parks and business incubators in the promotion of innovative SMI

The universities and research institutions of developing countries have been criticized in the past for their lack of involvement in technology development for small businesses. Science parks and 'business incubators' are now being launched in order to bring the technological skills of science and engineering faculties to bear upon the problems of local small- and medium-scale industries. This article describes the science parks being established in Asia, and how the concept of the 'business incubator', in which office facilities and assistance in management are shared between small firms, is being extended to help for small businesses who wish to make use of more advanced technologies. -

USAID microenterprise stocktaking evaluation

A recent stocktaking exercise has been examining the performance of the microenterprise assistance programmes funded by USAID. The programmes can be divided into three categories: enterprise formation, enterprise expansion and enterprise transformation. They have been evaluated according to the criteria of graduation into the formal sector, cost-effectiveness of funding and financial sustainability. -
International Small Business Conference in Sao Paulo

The largest annual gathering of small business took place in Sao Paulo last year. Among the papers presented were those examining the problems of enterprise in centrally planned economies, and the participants included delegations from Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. This conference is valued for the opportunity it affords for the informal exchange of views in between the sessions as much as for the content of the papers. -
