IDE (India)'s market creation approach to development
01.06.2005
Although drip irrigation is well-known to farmers in semi-arid regions of India, it is regarded as involving too great a capital investment for small and marginal farmers. This article describes the ADITI programme, which helped manufacturers develop a low-cost irrigation technology affordable by these farmers, which enables them to invest in horticulture and year-round vegetable production for the market. Existing irrigation equipment suppliers were involved in promoting the new technology and training farmers, and most of these suppliers have continued serving these farmers after the end of the programme.
