New approaches to skills training in Nigeria and Trinidad
01.09.1991
This article describes two programmes for training young people for skilled employment or self-employment. Both programmes have target groups among the disadvantaged: the Relevant Training workshops of Nigeria train young people who have little or no education beyond the primary level, and SERVOL in Trinidad accepts drop-outs from society who often have anti-social attitudes and need to be encouraged to develop a positive attitude to work. The programmes concentrate more on practical skills than paper qualifications, but their success in producing employable artisans is being increasingly recognized by the government, which in SERVOL's case is providing support for extending the programme, and which is adopting the RT workshops in Nigeria.
