How gender affects business start-up – evidence from Pakistan
01.03.1995
There is a conflict in the literature about the impact of gender on starting and running a business for women entrepreneurs in developing countries. One argument is that women face gender-related constraints in starting and running a business, while some researchers suggest that most activities associated with business start-up are gender-neutral (Wees and Romijn, 1987). This article, drawing on an in-depth study of 33 actual and potential women entrepreneurs, explores how gender actually affects women in starting and running a small business in the urban formal sector in Pakistan.
