Non-GMO soybean production - a new chance for small farmers in Brazil
Beat Gruninger, Hester Prummel, Cesar Colussi
In the south-east of the Brazilian state Parana, an export organization of organic products, Terra Preservada Ltda., is assisting a group of 500 small farmers in producing certified organic non-GMO soybeans. In a joint effort with a Dutch organic importer and a fair trade company of Switzerland, specific interventions in the production process have been undertaken to guarantee a supply of soybean to those processing
industries which are dedicated to sell certified non-GMO food products. There is considerable demand for non-GMO soybean in Europe, where consumers are willing to pay a premium; however, this demand can
only be met with the assistance of an export organization which has provided technical assistance and put in place extensive monitoring systems.
