Business support and the importance of the business network
The expectations surrounding the small-scale enterprise (SSE) sector's contribution to economic and social development in both developed and developing countries are nowadays high, and there is huge interest in providing support. It appears, however, that those organizations specificallyset up to provide it have not been able to deliver appropriate support to many of the SSEs who are most in need. The case study on which this article is based, in a small metal workshop in Dhaka, confirms this finding. SSEs have their own business networks which provide different types of
support needed. These business networks play a much more important role and offer many more development opportunities than is probably realized by the development community.
