Employment and social responsibility in Brazilian small enterprises – some cases from Sergipe
The rights and benefits of employees recognized by 'socially responsible' companies in the West are at a different level to those prevailing in developing countries. This article describes an attempt to find an appropriate definition of social responsibility for small companies in north-eastBrazil, where there is high unemployment and workers are often unskilled. Many of the companies were found to be exploitative, but some were better than others. The companies surveyed are divided into four types, and suggestions are made as to how they might be encouraged to progress towards
improving the conditions of their workforce.
