The critical factors for the success of co-operatives and other group enterprises
Co-operatives have been promoted vigorously in many countries, but more often than not these efforts have resulted in failure. The existence of successful co-operatives suggests, however, that given the right circumstances this form of enterprise can succeed. This article describesa survey designed to find out what are the critical factors associated with the successful running of co-operatives. No universal prescriptions can be derived from the results since the success of each institution depends to some extent on individual circumstances, but some issues are identified
that may be relevant to those starting or managing co-operatives.
